Nordstrom Sale Accessories

Ok peeps, it’s almost time to kick off the long weekend finally, but I wanted to pop on here quickly to share some of my picks from the latest Nordstrom sale. These are all 40% off and great picks for summer and beyond, so grab them while they last! Oh and everything here is under $100… most even under $50 or $25!

The gray bag below is one that I’ve had for years – it also comes in black and is affordable when it’s full-price, so even better now. The blush clutch is perfect for wedding season, along with all of the fun earrings (the gold tassels are smaller than the blue ones – click through the links for more colors). The black carry-on suitcase is under $100 – good travel staple. And of course, sales like these are the perfect time to buy things like sunglasses. I also love a fun phone case with the change of seasons and I’ve been looking for a small wallet with a zipper to travel with instead of my giant wallet.

That’s all for today! Hope everyone is signing offline and hitting the road to hang with friends and family while the good weather lasts!

Straw Bags for Spring, Summer & Vacations

When I first started seeing the popular Clare V crossbody straw bag popping up everywhere, I was dying to get it, but couldn’t bring myself to spend $175+ on one. And as it turns out, it was good that I held back on that purchase because soon after tons of straw bags – both less expensive versions of the round bags and lots of other styles with fun colors, pom poms and details like lobsters. Even better… there are so many under $100 and even $50!

I’m getting ready for a few summer weddings and trips and can’t wait to put my favorite straw bags to use. Shop lots of options using the links and widget below!

Fairmont Kea Lani Resort in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii

Seriously, why do I have to live so far away from Hawaii?! I’ve now been to Hawaii twice – both times visiting the beautiful island of Maui, which I love so very much. I have two full travel guides for Maui coming soon – one for Wailea and another for Kapalua, but today I’m starting off with a full overview of one of my all-time favorite hotels, the Fairmont Kea Lani. And if you’re planning a multi-island trip and heading to Kauai, be sure to check out my travel guides for Princeville (north side) and Poipu (south side). My Princeville guide is actually my most popular blog post ever, just saying!

Given the experience we had at the Fairmont Kea Lani, it comes as no surprise that this year, U.S. News Travel the resort received awards for Best Maui Hotels and Best Hawai’i Hotel. This resort was one of the main reasons we came back to Wailea. A few years ago the resort went through a $70 million renovation and let me tell you, it’s pretty incredible. One of my favorite things about it is that the entire property is made up of suites and villas, so you literally can’t go wrong with any room. Read on for lots more about our experience at the Fairmont!

What to Do

One of the things I love most about Hawaii is that it’s a tropical paradise while also offering lots to do to stay active. My husband isn’t one to spend a week sitting still on the beach {though I definitely could & he is getting better at it!}, so we like to have activities while we’re on vacation. And it’s always nice to do a few things that qualify as a workout to avoid getting completely off track. Plus when you’re in a place like Hawaii, anything outdoors is enjoyable!

I’ve been a little radio silent over here on the blog the past couple of weeks, and that’s because I was out in Colorado visiting friends and celebrating my brother’s college graduation, which made for a great long weekend. Keeping this one short and sweet today – go ahead and shop the post using the links and widget below. Everything is at least 40% off!

Affordable One-Piece Swim Picks

I’m pretty new to the one-piece swimwear trend… last year was the first time I fully embraced it. I’m heading to Croatia and Cali this spring and have been on the hunt for a few more. But because I live in New England, my attitude about swimwear has always been to avoid spending too much $ on them. They only get so much use around here, so in my opinion, it’s not worth it unless I find one that has the most incredible fit, great quality and a timeless style.

This year, I noticed that lots of stores like Target and Aerie have been offering free shipping/free returns on swimwear, so I went ahead and took advantage of that by ordering a wholeeee bunch of one-piece options to try on. I was expecting to wind up with maybe 2 to keep, but now I’m having a hard time narrowing it down! Below are some of my favorites and more details on each, including other colors they come in and how they fit. Shop these affordable one-piece swim picks via the links!*

Affordable One-Piece Swimwear - Target Swim

TOP:

Green Palm PrintI love this print – it’s exactly what I had in mind when I started my one-piece hunt. This one also comes in under $30, so it’s a steal. It has a low scoop back with fun detailing – and while I do love this, I’ve found that this style isn’t the best option for my body type. Because this is from the Xhilaration line, I recommend sizing up (I got a medium but probably could have used a large).

Black/White Striped with LaceI was skeptical about the fit of this one but went ahead and ordered after seeing lots of positive reviews… one person said they even went back for the black version with white lace. It reminds me of THIS more expensive version that I had my eye on last year, and I like that it has a tie in the back that allows you to adjust the tightness at your waist. There’s a very similar style from the Sea Angel line that comes in black and navy and you can also grab it in maternity sizing in both solids and prints here, here & here.

Pink Floral/TropicalThis is probably my favorite out of the bunch when it comes to the print – and I also like the Tori Praver line because I know they’re high quality for the price. If you’re looking at someone wearing this one from the back, it looks like they’re wearing a two-piece bikini. The medium fit well, but I ultimately decided not to keep this one in favor of others, mainly because I didn’t think the low back was super flattering on me. It also comes in this fun floral print and this bright tropical print.

BOTTOM:

Scalloped Black Floral: This option from the Vanilla Beach line is a pretty simple, low-back one-piece – but it has fun scalloped details that make it super flattering. If you’re looking for a solid color, it also comes in black, and here is another floral print option. I like that it has adjustable straps and the cut is a bit cheeky. Also got a medium in this one.

Green Floral/Birds of ParadiseAnother Tori Praver one-piece, this is in the running for my favorite this season. It can be worn/tied in two different ways and has a slight cutout on the sides. The bottom of it is cheeky, but also comes up the perfect amount so that you feel nice and sucked in in the right places. The medium was right for me on this one as well.

Gingham & Black: This is such a classic cut and I love that it has gingham on top (also available in stripes, solid black and a blue tropical/floral print). I had a similar style suit from J.Crew last year with the same ruching on the bottom half and knew this one would be good for my body type. Medium was good on this one – note that this one is less cheeky than some of the others but I still like it! If you’re looking for a gingham suit but this one isn’t for you, try this one, which also fit really well.

Bathroom Makeover with Target Opalhouse

While it certainly doesn’t feel like it, spring is finally here and I’m feeling the urge to make updates around the house. As you may have seen in another recent post, one of the things that sparked me taking action was the launch of the Target Opalhouse collection (more on that here, including all of my picks for every part of your home).

First up: the bathroom I call “mine,” which is technically connected to our spare bedroom, but my husband and I each took one since we have 2 full bathrooms. When we moved, we literally took everything from our 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment and plopped it into the guest room. Now it’s 8 years later and while we did get new bedding for the spare bed a couple of years ago, the bathroom has remained untouched.

Shower Curtain / Bath Mat (another option here)

Tissue Holder / Soap Dish / Toothbrush Holder

Soap/Lotion Dispenser / Waste Basket (similar)

Towels (other here & solid colors here)

Gold Frame (similar) / Watercolor Print (similar)

I had no idea how much of a difference something as simple as a shower curtain could make. Our old one was brown – I think I was trying to decorate in as gender-neutral of a way as possible! – and it made the bathroom seem so dark when you were actually taking a shower. I always thought it was because the bathroom didn’t have any windows/relatively crappy lighting, but now that I have a light shower curtain, that problem is gone! I also love this one – but ultimately decided to go with more of a blue/green vibe.

Beach Vacation Outfits

OK peeps… who is so sick of winter that you’re ready just to skip ahead to summer?! I sure am – but here in New England, summer isn’t quite in sight because it doesn’t even feel like spring (it snowed today, ugh). But to hold myself over, I’ve been deep in vacation planning. We’re heading to Colorado in May for my brother’s graduation, Croatia for a family vacation in June and then San Diego/LA to visit friends and go to a family wedding in July. Lots to look forward to!

And with that, I’m on the hunt for the perfect vacation/summer staples without spending too much cash money. I just ordered a bunch of bathing suits to try on from Target & Aerie and waiting for some good sales to shop so I can grab things like these shortalls that I’ve had my eye on. In the meantime, I took a look back beach vacation outfits I do have via pics from 2017 trips to Portugal and Hawaii – I still love all of these outfits and most of the items are still available (or very similar versions). Best Podcasts – Vol. 1

My husband is going to laugh at me when he sees this post, but that’s OK. I’ve been walking around listening to podcasts to and from work, while I do laundry, get my nails done, you get the point… all the while acting like podcasts are a new thing. News flash: they’re not. But I’m just now getting into them and I’m slightly obsessed. Who knew there were so many good ones out there on literally any topic you type in the search field?! And with my less-than-15-minute commute, it’s hard to get into a book or mag, so I love that I can listen to podcasts door-to-door.

So here goes the start of a new blog series… with my favorite podcasts and episodes. I’d love to get recommendations from all of you in the comments so I can continue trying new ones out!

Best Podcasts - Vol. 1

NPR’s How I Built This with Guy Raz – Stitch Fix: Katrina Lake (April 2, 2018):

I love this podcast so you can’t really go wrong with any episode – scroll back to old episodes and you’ll find stories about how brands like Kate Spade, Patagonia, Framebridge and even Instagram came to be the successful brands they are today. This is a great, more recent episode about how Katrina Lake came up with the idea for Stitch Fix, her online personal shopping service that uses technology to curate boxes of clothing just for you based on your preferences. As someone who has tried – and enjoyed – this service before, this was particularly interesting and inspiring. The company went from Katrina testing out the idea with 20 friends and acquaintances to where it is today with over two million customers and a billion dollars of annual revenue.

Skimm’d from the Couch – Sara Blakely: Founder and CEO of Spanx – Episode 008:

This is another girl boss success story, this time with another company I personally love, Spanx. I practically live in the brand’s faux leather leggings – you’ll find four different colors/styles on constant rotation in my closet. In the podcast, she tells the brand’s story, talking about what made them so unique in the marketplace: the fact that all of their products are essentially inventions, not just a new version of something that already exists. I loved this quote from Sara: “Sell the problem you’re solving, not the product.” She also encourages women starting businesses to think about what they got out of each failure, because there’s always something.

Bachelor Party by The RingerReflecting on ‘Laguna Beach’ and ‘The Hills’ With Creator Adam DiVello Plus His New Show ‘Music City’ (Ep. 13)

If you watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette, this podcast is a must while it’s airing – host Juliet Litman recaps each episode and has lots of guests from Bachelor Nation chatting about it with her. But I’ve quickly discovered that I also love her off-season podcasts… this one bringing me back to high school and college with Adam DiVello, creator of “Laguna Beach” and “The Hills,” which resulted in my Lauren Conrad obsession. I’ve been meaning to watch his new show, “Music City,” and going back in time with him in this podcast made me want to check it out even more – especially because it’s based in Nashville. What I found cool was that he mentioned that “Laguna Beach” was really a reality version of “The OC” – and “Music City” has a similar approach where the idea for the show came from doing a reality version of “Nashville,” which I also love.

Young Adulting by Grace Atwood & Becca Freeman – Ep 3: Advice/ Passions, Promotions + More

I’ve been a longtime follower of Grace’s – her blog, TheStripe.com, is one of the few that I read a few times a week. She’s so real, I love her style and we love the same kinds of books. After she got me hooked on the YA series “The Thousandth Floor” (more to come on that in my next book review!), I was excited to hear she was launching a podcast where she’d be talking about “bad books and good advice” with her former Baublebar coworker and friend, Becca Freeman. Admittedly, I listened to episode 1 and 3 – I want to read the books before listening to the book episodes! Episode 3 gives some good advice about turning hobbies into careers, including the benefits and drawbacks. Read more about this episode in Grace’s latest blog post.

Target Opalhouse Collection Finds

If you read my 2018 goals post back in January, then you know that my husband and I are approaching 6 years in our city condo and I’m feeling the need for a refresh… but without going crazy cost-wise. In addition to tackling closets and whatnot with organization bit by bit, I had a few ideas for ways to spruce up our space. The first things I’ve been on the hunt for are a new shower curtain/bathroom set for “my” bathroom, coffee table, end tables and throw pillows for the living room, and other fun décor like kitchen towels.

I successfully found a couple of throw pillows I liked for the living room but hadn’t had much luck in the other areas until this week. In fact, when I hosted a small group of family over Easter, I ran out to the store to grab some festive floral paper napkins because I felt like we had nothing that said “spring” for the holiday. Enter Target’s new Opalhouse collection… I literally want everything! I had a good amount of self-control and stuck with items that were on my priority list, such as this shower curtain, these throw pillows and some floral napkins and kitchen towels. I’ll be reporting back on what works out in future blog/social posts!

In the meantime, there is SO much to shop in this collection. It’s quickly gaining so much popularity that I personally think Target should make it a permanent line. I bucketed out my picks from the collection by room/category to make shopping easier. Just browse through the widgets using the arrow and click the items you like to be directed to shop.* If you’re not ready to shop, just pin one of the larger images for decor inspiration later!
